Guest Speaker: Dr. Ty Cauthen, Executive Director for Work Force Solutions Deep East Texas “Building Champions Through Recreation: The Power of Connection in Youth Programming and Special Events” This topic draws from Dr. Cauthen’s background in education, leadership, and his passion for being a “champion” for young people. It can translate well into the parks and recreation field by focusing on how recreation staff can: Create programming that empowers youth and reduces barriers to participation. Use special events as opportunities to connect with underserved or at-risk populations. Recognize the role of parks and recreation professionals as “champions” in their communities—just like educators are for their students.
Guest Speaker Bio: Dr. Ty Cauthen, Director of the Lufkin Early College High School, completed his B.S. in Agriculture Production and Development in 2011 at Stephen F. Austin State University. He finished his Masters in Educational Leadership at Stephen F. Austin State University in 2015, Superintendent Certification from the University of Texas in 2017, and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University in 2021. His dissertation focused on telling the stories of recidivist students to DAEP. Dr. Cauthen served as an Agriculture Science Instructor for five years before venturing into educational leadership. A quote that has guided him to this position and expresses his passion for this role: “Every child deserves a champion—an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” by Rita Pierson"
